I’d pictured couches with homemade coverings on them. I’d pictured paintings of landscapes and possibly even kittens on the walls. I’d pictured a homely design, the kind one’s grandmother’s home might have lived in. The smell of cookies in the oven, antiques on the shelves, maybe even a reading corner with a nice big book collection.

What I got instead of that was... well, not much, truth be told.

The apartment was slovenly, to say the least. Sparse. Empty. Lacking in anything even remotely welcoming. The furniture was plastic chairs and tables. The decor was likely just whatever had come with the place. The smell was damp and moldy, while the carpet squished beneath my feet.
